Welcome to Cruden Parish Church!  We are a congregation of the Church of Scotland serving the communities in and around the villages of Longhaven, Hatton, Cruden Bay and Whinnyfold. We also extend a special welcome to those unable to be physically present with us this morning and following the service online. Wherever you are and whatever your circumstances, we pray that you may know God’s blessing and presence during this time of worship.

Call to Worship

God of the open road,
God of the twisting path,
God of the narrow and upward way,
your people are gathered for worship!
In this hour, give us provision for the journey,
courage and faith and compassion,
and endurance to face any hardship.

Open our eyes to see you walking beside us,
protecting us, encouraging us, loving us.

Let us worship God

 Hymn 485 Dear Lord and Father of mankind

  1. Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
    forgive our foolish ways!
    Re-clothe us in our rightful mind,
    in purer lives thy service find,
    in deeper reverence, praise;
    in deeper reverence, praise.

  2. In simple trust like theirs who heard,
    beside the Syrian sea,
    the gracious calling of the Lord,
    let us, like them, without a word,
    rise up and follow thee;
    rise up and follow thee.

  3. O Sabbath rest by Galilee!
    O calm of hills above,
    where Jesus knelt to share with thee
    the silence of eternity
    interpreted by love!
    interpreted by love!

  4. Drop thy still dews of quietness,
    till all our strivings cease;
    take from our souls the strain and stress,
    and let our ordered lives confess
    the beauty of thy peace;
    the beauty of thy peace.

  5. Breathe through the heats of our desire
    thy coolness and thy balm;
    let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
    speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
    O still, small voice of calm;
    O still, small voice of calm.

Prayers of Approach

Before we speak, God knows our needs,
yet our words open our hearts to God's grace.
Let us prepare ourselves for God's healing
as, in words and silence, we tell of all that separates us from God and one another.

Please join me as we pray…

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Amen

Bible Readings

Matthew 16:13-20

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

 Matthew 28:16-20

The Great Commission

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Sermon    ‘Listening to the heart of God – Vocation!’

Hymn  64: seek ye first

  1. Seek ye first the kingdom of God
    And His righteousness;
    And all these things shall be added unto you.
    allelu, allelujah!

    Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

  2. Ask, and it shall be given unto you;
    Seek, and you shall find.
    Knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
    allelu, allelujah!

  3. Man shall not live by bread alone,
    But by every word
    That proceeds out from the mouth of God.
    allelu, allelujah!

Prayers of Intercession

Hymn 465: Be thou my vision

  1. Be Thou my vision, oh Lord of my heart
    Nought be all else to me, save that Thy art
    Thou my best thought, in the day and the night
    Waking or sleeping, Thou presence my light

  2. Be Thou my wisdom, be Thou my true word
    I ever with Thee, and Thou with me Lord
    Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son
    Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one

  3. Be Thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight
    Be Thou my dignity, thou my delight
    Thou my soul shelter, and Thy my high tower
    Raise Thou me heavenwards, ) power of my power

  4. Riches I need not, nor man's empty praise
    Thou mine inheritance through all of my days
    Thou and Thou only, though first in my heart
    High king of heaven, my treasure Thou art

  5. High king of heaven, after victory is won
    May I reach heaven’s joys, O  bright heaven’s sun
    Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
    Still be my vision, O ruler of all

Dedication and Blessing

May we make wise choices, O God.
May we choose life over selfishness.
May we choose hope over comfort.
May we choose justice over complacency.
May we choose you over all other things.
May we choose to speak
when others are silent.
May we choose to live peacefully
when others are at war.
May we choose to live in balance
when others take for themselves.
May we choose you over all other things.
May we choose love over greed.
May we choose grace over power.
May we choose forgiveness over grudges.
May we choose you over all other things.
So that you choose us to be yours
always and forever. Amen.

God in peace from this space of worship.

May the blessing of God the Father,
the companionship of Jesus Christ,
and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Be with you all forever more.
Amen
